deck builders

Before breaking ground, every successful deck-building project begins with a well-thought-out plan and design. This stage is where creativity meets practicality and several key factors must be considered:

  • Define the primary purpose of the deck (e.g., dining area, lounging, entertainment).
  • Consider the size and layout based on your anticipated use and the available space.
  • Analyze the sun’s path to determine the deck’s optimal orientation.
  • Account for factors like privacy, views, and proximity to the house.
  • Choose suitable decking materials (e.g., wood, composite, PVC) based on your budget and desired aesthetics.
  • Consider maintenance requirements and longevity when selecting fabrics.
  • Check local building codes and obtain the necessary permits before proceeding.
  • Ensure compliance with setback requirements and zoning regulations.
  • Incorporate design elements such as railings, stairs, and built-in seating.
  • Explore creative options for enhancing the deck’s visual appeal.

Once the design is finalized, it’s time to gather the materials and tools necessary for the job. Professional deck builders understand the importance of quality materials and having the right tools at their disposal:

  • Wood: Traditional and natural, with various species (e.g., cedar, redwood, pressure-treated lumber).
  • Composite: Low-maintenance, durable, and available in multiple colors and textures.
  • PVC: Resistant to moisture and rot, making it an ideal choice for wet climates.
  • Select corrosion-resistant screws, nails, and connectors to ensure the deck’s longevity.
  • Use galvanized or stainless steel fasteners for wood decks.
  • Essential tools include a circular saw, miter saw, drill, level, tape measure, and safety gear.
  • Specialized tools like a decking jig or hidden fastener system may be required for specific designs.
  • Prioritize safety with personal protective equipment, including eye and ear protection, dust masks, and gloves.
  • Ensure that ladders and scaffolding are in good condition and used safely.

With materials and tools in hand, the construction phase can begin. Professional deck building involves a systematic approach to ensure a structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing result:

  • Clear the construction site of vegetation, debris, and any obstacles.
  • Mark out the deck’s layout using string lines, stakes, and batter boards.
  • Dig post holes to the required depth and diameter based on local codes and soil conditions.
  • Pour concrete footings or use precast concrete piers to support the deck posts.
  • Install ledger boards and attach them securely to the house.
  • Build the deck frame using pressure-treated lumber, ensuring proper spacing for joists.
  • Lay the decking boards perpendicular to the posts for maximum stability.
  • Use spacers to maintain consistent gaps between panels for adequate drainage.
  • Install railings that meet safety requirements while complementing the deck’s design.
  • Ensure that balusters are spaced appropriately to prevent accidents.
  • Construct sturdy and safe staircases with proper rise and run dimensions.
  • Include landings as needed for smooth transitions between levels.
  • Apply a protective finish or stain to wood decks to enhance their appearance and durability.
  • Add lighting, seating, and other accessories to complete the deck’s functionality.

Professional deck builders understand that the job continues after construction. Regular maintenance and care are essential to preserve the deck’s beauty and structural integrity:

  • Regularly sweep or use a leaf blower to remove debris and leaves from the deck’s surface.
  • Wash the deck with a mild detergent and a pressure washer to remove dirt and stains.
  • Periodically inspect the deck for loose or damaged boards, railings, and fasteners.
  • Check for signs of rot or insect infestation in wooden decks.
  • Reapply a protective sealer or stain to shield the deck from UV rays and moisture.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance intervals.
  • Address any structural issues promptly to prevent further damage.
  • Replace damaged boards or components to maintain safety and aesthetics.

In the modern era, sustainability is crucial in professional deck building. Many homeowners and builders are opting for eco-friendly practices and materials:

  • Consider using sustainably sourced wood or recycled materials for decking.
  • Explore composite or PVC decking made from recycled content.
  • Design the deck to minimize waste and maximize space utilization.
  • Use efficient construction techniques to reduce energy consumption.
  • Dispose of construction waste responsibly by recycling or reusing materials when possible.
  • Encourage clients to consider recycling old decking materials when replacing a deck.

While some homeowners may attempt DIY deck projects, there are compelling reasons to hire a professional deck builder:

6.1. Expertise and Experience

  • Professional builders possess the knowledge and experience to ensure a safe and structurally sound deck.
  • They can navigate complex designs, obtain permits, and comply with local building codes.
  • Hiring a professional saves homeowners time and effort in planning, construction, and maintenance.
  • Professionals can complete projects efficiently, minimizing disruption to daily life.
  • Professional builders use high-quality materials and craftsmanship, often backed by warranties.
  • Homeowners can enjoy peace of mind knowing their deck is built to last.

Professional deck building combines artistry and precision, requiring careful planning, quality materials, and skilled craftsmanship. Whether you’re a homeowner seeking to enhance your outdoor living space or a contractor aiming to master the craft, the journey to creating a stunning and functional deck is rewarding. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can embark on your deck-building project with confidence, knowing that

The planning and design phase is the foundation for any successful deck project. Taking the time to carefully consider the deck’s purpose, location, materials, and design elements ensures that the result aligns with your vision and meets your practical needs. Additionally, being aware of local regulations and obtaining the necessary permits are crucial steps that should not be overlooked.

Materials and tools are the building blocks of your deck, and choosing the right ones can make a world of difference. Each choice impacts the deck’s appearance, maintenance requirements, and longevity, from the type of decking material you select to the fasteners and hardware you use. Equally important is having the appropriate tools and safety gear to complete the project safely and efficiently.

The construction process itself demands meticulous attention to detail and adherence to best practices. Site preparation, foundation work, framing, and decking installation are all integral steps that must be executed precisely. The finishing touches, such as railings, stairs, and lighting, add functionality and beauty to the deck.

Maintenance and care must be balanced. A well-maintained deck looks inviting and stands the test of time. Regular cleaning, inspections, and timely repairs ensure the deck remains safe and attractive. Applying protective finishes or stains as needed preserves the wood’s integrity and enhances its appearance.

Sustainability and environmental considerations are increasingly vital aspects of professional deck building. By opting for sustainable materials, efficient design, and responsible disposal practices, builders can reduce their ecological footprint and contribute to a greener future.

The decision between hiring a professional and taking on a DIY deck project hinges on various factors, including expertise, time, convenience, and quality expectations. While DIY projects can be rewarding, professional deck builders bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table, ensuring that the deck meets and exceeds expectations. Their ability to handle complex designs, navigate permitting processes, and provide high-quality craftsmanship is a compelling reason to consider their services.

In the end, whether you hire a professional or embark on a DIY journey, the goal of professional deck building remains the same: to create an outdoor space that seamlessly blends form and function. A well-designed and expertly constructed deck extends your living room, where memories are made and moments are cherished.

So, as you set out on your deck-building adventure, armed with the knowledge and insights provided in this guide, remember that every step, from the initial vision to the final finishing touch, contributes to creating an outdoor haven. With dedication, careful planning, and the right materials and tools, you can transform your backyard into a beautiful and functional oasis that enhances the quality of life for you, your family, and your friends. Enjoy the journey, and may your deck be a source of joy and relaxation for years.

What Does it Take to Be a Plumber?

Plumbers are responsible for installing and repairing pipes that carry water, gas, or other fluids. Plumbers also work with sinks, toilets, and other fixtures. Those who enjoy working with their hands and have strong analytical skills should consider this career path. It can lead to a rewarding career in building services engineering or construction management.

Plumbing

Those who work as plumbers must have various skills to ensure that buildings’ water, sewage, and drainage systems are working properly. This includes responding to emergency call-outs, like blocked drains and boiler breakdowns. It also involves installing weather-proof materials and joints on roofs, chimneys and walls.

The qualifications that you need to become a plumber include technical training, an apprenticeship and on-the-job experience. You can gain this through taking a plumbing course at a vocational school or through an on-the-job apprenticeship, which can last up to five years. You can also get technical training through trade organisations such as the Associated Builders and Contractors Empire State Chapter.

Many states require that plumbers pass an exam and have a license to work in this field. This is because the profession deals with safety, public health and environmental issues. Typically, you must complete a minimum number of classroom hours and gain hands-on work experience as an apprentice before you can take the exam. Some states also expect that you have completed a certain number of work hours as a journeyperson, supervised by a master plumber.

Plumbers must have the physical strength to carry heavy tools and work in tight spaces. They should also be able to read blueprints and understand construction plans. Other skills that you need to be a plumber include critical thinking, troubleshooting and interpersonal communication. In addition, you should be able to listen carefully to customers’ problems and provide them with solutions that address their concerns.

If you want to be a more specialised plumber, you can undertake further training and get certified in a particular area of plumbing, such as gas installation and heating system maintenance. This will allow you to do more advanced plumbing jobs and earn higher salaries. You can also become a master plumber after gaining at least five years of experience as a journeyperson. Some plumbers pursue voluntary certification to demonstrate their skills and to show potential clients that they are qualified professionals. You can find out more about the specific requirements for becoming a licensed plumber by contacting your local licensing body.

Plumbers must complete extensive technical training and experience before they are licensed to work in the field. The training includes OSHA safety classes, detailed instruction in chemistry, mathematics, physics and blueprint reading and drafting. They also learn about the various plumbing fixtures, how to install them and how to repair and maintain them.

In addition to the technical training, a plumbing apprentice must be patient and detail-oriented, as well as physically fit enough for hours of standing or working in tight spaces. Many plumbers spend a significant amount of time crouching or crawling in tiny spaces to reach valves or pipes that are otherwise out of reach. For this reason, a plumber training center ensures that their students are physically prepared for the rigors of the job.

Those who are interested in becoming a plumber can receive the proper training through a formal apprenticeship program or a trade school certificate course. Those with a high school diploma may be able to find entry-level jobs with small plumbing companies or businesses that are looking for new employees. Apprenticeship programs through the Associated Builders and Contractors Empire State Chapter, for example, offer comprehensive training in their Construction Training Centers in both Albany and Long Island.

Apprenticeships through local United Association unions are also a good way to get the required training for a plumbing career. Many of these programs last five years and include classroom instruction as well as on-the-job training under a master plumber. New York has several UA local chapters that offer plumbing, pipefitting and welding apprenticeships.

The demand for skilled plumbing professionals is very robust, so it’s a great time to consider this rewarding and lucrative career. Plumbers are responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing systems that supply potable water and handle sewage and drainage. They collaborate with other construction professionals to make sure that all aspects of a building’s plumbing are functioning correctly during renovations or new builds. They’re also called upon to provide emergency services, responding to calls for help from frantic homeowners or business owners in the middle of the night.

A plumber needs to have a good deal of experience under their belt in order to become proficient at their trade. This typically comes from years of apprenticeship and also training at a vocational school or trade program. The best way to find out if a plumber is the right fit for you is to ask about their work history and see what past customers have had to say.

One thing to look for in a plumber is their ability to communicate clearly with their clients. This is especially important when explaining what the problem is and how they plan to fix it. It can also be helpful in building a rapport with the customer and easing any anxiety they might have about the situation.

Aside from communication skills, plumbers should have a practical mind and manual dexterity in order to carry out their duties effectively. They often work with complex machinery and must be comfortable working in cramped spaces. Plumbers must also be able to read and interpret blueprints in order to properly install and repair plumbing systems.

Plumbers are responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining the water, waste and gas systems of their clients. They can work in a variety of settings, from residential homes to large commercial buildings. They are also known to work with other construction professionals, including general contractors, on new build projects.

To ensure that their work meets the necessary standards, plumbers must be familiar with a wide range of materials and tools. This includes knowing how to work with different types of pipes, fittings and fixtures. They should also be able to identify any potential problems with these systems and resolve them quickly before they escalate.

Finally, a good plumber will be punctual and reliable. This is important because it shows that they take their work seriously and will be able to address any issues promptly. It also helps them maintain a positive reputation in their community. This is particularly important if a plumber works in an area that has a lot of competition from other companies.

Plumbing is a skilled trade that requires years of training and experience to become proficient. Many jurisdictions, including New York, require plumbers to be licensed in order to ensure that their work meets industry standards and complies with local building codes. In addition to the technical requirements of the job, licensed plumbers must also have a number of soft skills in order to communicate effectively with customers and manage projects efficiently.

Licensing and certification requirements vary by state, with most states requiring two to five years of apprenticeship and passing an exam to become licensed as a journey plumber. However, some schools that offer training programs for plumbers include a portion of the licensing requirement on their curriculum, which can help streamline the process for apprentices and aspiring journey plumbers.

The exams for licensed plumbers typically consist of a written test and a practical exam. The written test consists of multiple-choice questions and covers the major areas that a licensed plumber is expected to know, including regulations, safety practices, water heaters, water and sewage systems, and construction and installation.

In order to prepare for the exam, students should enroll in a program that includes both classroom instruction and hands-on lab experience. They should practice using a variety of tools, such as soldering guns, copper fittings, wrenches, and pliers, to make sure they have the skills necessary for the exam. It is also a good idea for plumbers to take an online practice exam prior to taking the actual test.

Once a plumber has completed their apprenticeship and passed the exam, they can apply to become a master plumber in New York City. In order to do so, they must have documented proof of at least two years of work experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems. They must also pass a written and practical exam and complete a background check. Applicants can submit their documentation electronically via the DOB NOW Portal.

Residential plumbers are tasked with maintaining the water and sewage systems in single-family homes and apartment buildings. They often work on new construction, as well as performing yearly maintenance and repairs for existing systems. In order to perform their duties, they must have excellent communication skills, as they must be able to explain complex plumbing issues clearly to homeowners and building managers. They must also be able to listen to customer complaints and recommend appropriate solutions.

How to Find a Contractor for a Bathroom Remodel

If you are planning to remodel your bathroom, then you need to know the facts about the cost and materials you will need to use. Also, you need to find a contractor who can help you with the process. Here are some tips to help you find the right contractor.

Bathroom Remodel

When looking to update a bathroom in your home, it is important to consider the cost of your remodel. There are numerous factors that influence the total costs of a bathroom renovation, such as the type of bathroom, materials, labor, and more. By knowing the total cost of your project, you can make sure that you are not overspending.

The most expensive part of your remodel may include the plumbing. Whether you’re doing a new sink, tiling, or a complete gut job, plumbing is one of the most difficult and costly areas of a bathroom. Depending on the size of your room, the cost can range from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand. It’s also a good idea to add a contingency budget to the project so that you can cover unexpected issues.

Choosing the right bathroom remodeling contractor can help you save time, money, and headaches. Licensed contractors know the best practices for completing a successful remodel. They will also factor in the costs of insurance, licensing, and bonding. You can find a list of reputable contractors by visiting HomeAdvisor’s contractor directory. A reputable contractor will have a higher rate of satisfaction with their work, but they’ll likely have a more expensive fee.

If you have the time and budget, you can do some of the remodelings yourself. However, if you need a professional, you’ll pay a high rate. For a mid-grade bath remodel, you can expect to spend between $15 and $25,000. That includes demolition costs, labor, and materials.

Your home’s current bathroom layout and whether you want to change your floor plan can also increase the cost. Changing your floor plan can mean moving walls, relocating fixtures, and adding features, such as a tub or shower. These are usually more complex projects that require the expertise of a general contractor.

Another aspect that influences the cost of your bathroom renovation is the quality of the materials you choose. Generally, lower-quality materials will be less expensive than higher-end ones. Also, you should consider the grade of the tiles and flooring. Tiles that have cracks or holes can be a safety hazard and can cause water damage to the rest of your house. Using the proper tiling techniques can prevent such problems.

Some people simply replace the toilet, vanity, and flooring, while others are looking to do a full gut job. Typically, the less complex jobs are about changing the look of the space.

Larger bathrooms are generally more expensive than smaller ones. In addition, larger rooms require more materials and time. Additionally, they often have load-bearing walls, which can add to the demolition and construction costs. Depending on your needs, you might also have to get a building permit for the project.

Bathrooms can be tricky to estimate because of their wide variety of materials and components. Because of this, you’ll have to figure out what you want before you begin your remodel. Fortunately, you can price shop around, checking out a variety of home improvement stores, specialty shops, and online markets.

If you are looking to renovate your bathroom, you should consider the best materials to use. Materials that are functional and efficient should be the main focus of your project. This will also help you achieve a design that is in line with your needs and wants.

You can get a good deal of value from materials that are not only practical but also stylish. For example, a beautiful shower curtain can add a touch of luxury to the room. A colorful tile can bring an eye-catching accent to any design. However, it is important that your new floor be moisture-resistant.

Another key factor to consider is the size of your bathroom. The size of the space will dictate the cost of your remodel. Your budget should be used wisely. Also, you will need to think about the fixtures you want to install in your bathroom. Some fixtures can be very expensive, so you should only buy what you really need.

Reflecting on an Eventful Year

It’s safe to say this past year was filled with the unexpected—like staying nimble as we adjusted to new and ongoing issues in shipping and construction logistics. It’s also been filled with good. As the construction industry regained momentum, so too has the modular sector. Not only did we see five projects that feature our products open to the public, but we also opened our own new facility, SurePods West, to better meet demand. Because the construction industry is continuing to see the benefits of modular building, we expect to be just as, if not more, active in 2022. But before we toast to the new year, we want to reflect on a few 2021 highlights.

look-back at key projects

We were fortunate to support the opening of several building projects this past year. Our prefabricated bathroom pods helped contractors facing site challenges shave two months off the schedule for the JW Marriott in Charlotte, North Carolina. By collaborating on the Prism Apartments in the pre-construction phase, our design team made it easier for Consigli Construction to implement lean construction methods and stay on budget and on schedule. And not to be left out, one of the most unique projects to feature our products is Legoland Hotel in Goshen, New York.

Legos introduce so many people to the concept of modular building, so we were delighted to provide this hotel with modular bathroom pods. Plus, our prefabricated bathroom pods allowed the designers to have a consistent, high-quality bathroom that could be modified to fit the different room themes throughout the hotel.

Benefits of modular construction in the news

In addition to the fun projects we’ve been a part of, we’ve also enjoyed seeing the benefits of modular construction in the news. One article in commARCH explains how our bathroom pods helped Consigli Construction sideline challenges they faced in the Boston/Cambridge area, like complicated transportation logistics and a tight skilled trade labor market. If this sounds familiar, it’s because it is. These issues have plagued the construction industry across the country in the past couple years.

By consolidating up to 12 trades and eliminating the need for a punch list, our bathroom pods not only saved contractors from the headaches of coordinating different trades but also time throughout the building process. In fact, according to Dave Curry, Consigli Construction’s preconstruction director, our prefabricated bathrooms helped Consigli “accomplish what would traditionally require 100 hours of labor per bathroom in 10 minutes.”

Going behind the scenes

As developers increasingly turn to modular building to solve construction issues, we’ve seen more interest in our prefabrication process. Recently, the Construction Brothers stopped by SurePods to film a video about how our bathrooms are built and shipped to jobsites across the country.

This video highlights how our factory-controlled environments help ensure a quality product from start to finish and a safe work setting for our team. The video also explains how the process eliminates wastes to increase productivity. For a more in-depth discussion about prefabrication, the Construction Brothers interviewed Bill Seery, Vice President at SurePods, on their podcast.

Ending the year and beginning the next

These were just a few of the highlights from 2021. We are both grateful for what’s been accomplished and excited for what lies ahead (including more projects in healthcare and residential facilities). We could not have done any of this without our dedicated SurePods team and our innovative customers, so we’d like to end by saying thank you to everyone for helping make 2021 a year of growth and a year of change.

What Basins are On-Trend for Modern Bathroom Designs in 2022?

A statement basin is the way to go if you want an on-trend bathroom renovation in 2022. A bathroom basin, along with its tapware, accessories, and vanity, can add a stylish touch to your bathroom by creating a focal point.

But as bathroom basins are available in various designs, colours, and finishes. From organic to square, wall-mounted basins, inset, under-mount, semi-recessed basins, freestanding basins and much much more, choosing your bathroom sink is an overwhelming decision!

Selecting a bathroom basin appropriate for your household’s lifestyles and room layout is critical to successfully completing your bathroom renovations. So, let’s look at six bathroom basins that we have become increasingly dominant in 2021 modern bathroom designs, meaning they are likely to stay on trend for 2022 bathroom renovations!

Vessel Basins

A vessel basin stands entirely on top of your countertop, and as the name implies, is essentially a giant bowl, so it’s a perfect choice if you want a deep basin that can store a lot of water.

Unlike most countertop basins, which display a portion of the basin, vessel basins command attention and are an excellent way to make a statement in your modern bathroom design.

Although vessel basins still have their negatives, because of the basin height, careful planning of the bench height and the cabinets are required to ensure that the basin does not end up being too high and uncomfortable for users.

Although this is no worry for Novalé clients – from bathroom renovations Alexandria to bathroom renovations Newcastle – our skilled bathroom designers can ensure custom placement for all bathroom aspects tailored to the specific heights of household members!

Circular Countertop Basins

Although vessel basins make a stunning statement in a modern bathroom design, this mount has a few negatives. However, if you are set on the curvy and round trend, a surface mount basin could be for you as this basin shape offers a plethora of options and benefits!

Circular countertop basins are lovely for showcasing exquisite design features because the entire basin is exposed, making them ideal statement pieces. Countertop basins also provide more options for tap placement to ensure a more comfortable height for homeowners than conventional basins since they sit on top of the counter. Plus, in the case of bigger bowl sizes, they give a far better wash area.

A round above-counter basin exudes modern opulence with a simple and elegant appearance, creating a forceful yet subtle design statement. Like the basin in this bathroom renovation Redfern, soft curves give a spa-like atmosphere to a space when paired with a minimalist style and neutral tones.

Coloured Sinks

With roots in mid-century retro, the coloured sinks from the ’70s are coming back in trend! 2022 is the year that coloured and bold accents make a comeback, adding some visual appeal to modern bathroom designs. However, your bathroom basin does not have to be super bright, just like in this Yattalunga, Central Coast bathroom renovation, which complements the warmer tones of the timber vanity with a warm bowl basin, taking neutral minimalism to all new heights.

To Match the Bright Sinks, Tapware and Accessories will Also Trend in Unconventional Colours

Forget about chrome as your only option; there are now so many stylish colours and finishes to choose from! Chrome has long been the most popular option for bathroom faucets and other accessories, but designers now favour warm metals like copper, bronze, brass, and nickel for taps and accessories.

Warm metal tones work well in practically every bathroom colour scheme. There are so many different designs that you can discover items that will fit with anything from an industrial bathroom to a timeless, vintage, or ultra-modern bathroom renovation.

It’s time to transform your drab faucet ware into a work of art! Tapware, in any case, is no longer in the background; they’re here to make a statement in modern bathroom designs, just like the gold embellishments in this Kurrajong Heights, Central Coast bathroom renovation.

Most Importantly, Environmentally Conscious Sinks Will Trend

Maybe due to recent international events or just because people are waking up to the necessity of caring for the earth; nevertheless, sustainability is a principle that drives modern bathroom design. Water-saving appliances may take various forms, from installing water-saving taps, toilets, and showers to using sustainable, up-cycled, and recycled bathroom furnishings.

Particularly in trendy areas of Sydney, we have seen the sustainability trend, such as recycled flooring and upcycled basins, be extremely popular such as Redfern bathroom renovations and bathroom renovation Alexandria.

Floating Vanities

Floating sinks are becoming increasingly popular as they improve the usefulness and aesthetics of small bathrooms (particularly powder rooms) in 2022. Clearing the area beneath a sink increases the airiness of a small bathroom renovation and makes the space appear larger.

Floating sinks improve the attractiveness of your bathroom, whether they are constructed of wood, marble, or any other material. Just like the floating vanity in this Redfern bathroom renovation which gives the space a contemporary touch while keeping a pristine area with little to no clutter.

What’s Ahead for Modular Bathrooms in 2022?

As predicted last year, the global market for modular construction has been on an upward trajectory. Experts forecast that growth will continue through 2028, a trend which makes sense considering current market conditions. Modular construction not only makes it possible to expedite the process of designing and assembling building systems, but it also offers unique solutions to labor shortages and supply chain issues that are predicted to linger.

Because bathrooms are a repeated element throughout a building, we’ve seen firsthand how designers and contractors are turning to prefabricated, modular bathroom pods for the above benefits and to stay on track in a time when predictability seems near impossible. While the advantages of modular construction drive its increasing popularity, they also imply future construction trends.

Below are some developments we’re anticipating for 2022 and how modular construction methods can meet the moment and benefit workers, contractors and clients in the process.

More developers will turn to alternative methods to combat shipping challenges

Ideally, just-in-time shipping streamlines construction, but, as we have seen the past few years, supply chain issues can disrupt this approach. Stalled shipments can create congested jobsites and compound delays, all of which affect the bottom-line. For example, if a material is delivered late, its arrival might coincide with another material’s. Crews would then have to scramble to move materials to accommodate the late shipment. Delays further impact construction by altering when skilled trades, like plumbers and electricians, can do their work.

To combat ongoing shipping challenges, more developers and contractors will turn to alternative construction methods to keep materials and projects moving. Modular bathrooms, for example, can be built offsite as the building area is being prepared, which accelerates a job’s timeline. Then, when the site is ready, these pods can be delivered and installed at just the right moment. Secondly, because parallel construction makes it possible to secure materials prior to weathering in, alternative methods can help simplify logistics and provide more control over volatile market conditions.

Labor shortages will continue

Contractors across the nation are having difficulty finding skilled workers. With more people retiring from construction and fewer people entering the industry, it will remain key to look for ways to replenish the workforce. We at SurePods know that building a better future starts with people. Because prefabrication offers consistency, predictability and safety, it is the perfect entry point for those new to the trade.

Sustainability will remain a focus

Sustainability is increasingly becoming an industry standard. Modular construction is an attractive solution as the process is typically more material and waste conscious than conventional methods. For instance, prefabricated modular bathrooms use recycled steel and wallboard and comply with strict quality standards from production through installation. These standards mean a long-lasting product with fewer repairs and replacements over its lifetime.

Further, the use of automated processes translates to more precise products and fewer mistakes, resulting in less material and energy waste due to rebuilds.

Even with the above constraints, more developers will specify custom builds

Advances in modular construction have given designers more freedom to customize their projects while still enjoying all the benefits of prefabricated construction, debunking the myth that repeatable units means cookie cutter designs. Because our current technology allows us to prefabricate better than ever, we can accommodate more design flexibility, solving site specific issues upfront. This includes creating tailor made, enterprise-wide solutions that can be used for multiple projects.

Modular presents tomorrow’s solutions today

These are just a few of the things we see driving the construction industry in 2022. Whether the need is for a leaner design or a method for mitigating material and labor shortages, modular bathroom pods are an easy first step into prefabricated construction.
