How Novalé Made an Inner West Small Bathroom Renovation BIG on Style

The Inner West council is among Sydney’s largest local government areas, a community of distinctively creative and dynamic neighbourhoods, defined by many cultures, philosophies, and life experiences.

From Ashfield to Hurlstone Park, most Inner West housing is connected terraces with smaller rooms and bathrooms. As a result, most Inner West bathroom installations require innovative small bathroom renovation tactics to make the most of their quaint inner-city living spaces.

Whether you own an apartment, terrace or house, small bathrooms are typical for many Inner West residents. While many people think that narrow and small bathroom installations are limited in size and arrangement in terms of function and style, that’s not always the case.

In actuality, making a small bathroom installation appear larger and seem more spacious, all while incorporating personal décor, is an art that many designers jump at the chance to tackle.

To demonstrate just how exciting small bathroom renovations can be, let’s take a look at a past Novalé Inner West bathroom renovation in Marrickville. Even though this Marrickville bathroom renovation includes four bathroom installations and a laundry renovation, each room is relatively small and narrow. As a result, Novalé designers utilised several design tips and tricks to make these standard small and narrow bathrooms look great and feel larger than they are.

So, how do you make a bathroom installation visually look bigger? Here are four design tricks Novalé designers used to make narrow and small bathroom installations look larger in this Marrickville home.

Bounce Light with a Light Colour Scheme

One of the most common questions Novalé is asked for small bathroom renovations is, what colours make a small bathroom look larger?

A trick that Novalé designers regularly use to make a space feel larger is to pick one light colour and use that throughout the space. Complementing colours are then used through texture to add another element. Even though a bathroom installation is small, a cohesive colour palette can make the space feel larger than it is, creating an airy atmosphere.

In our Marrickville small bathroom renovation example, the marble’s visual pattern helps add another element of texture into the small bathroom installation whilst also keeping the urban design and monochrome colour pattern in line.

With a white emphasis from the marble, natural light can easily bounce throughout the space, making the area feel lighter and more expansive than it actually is. Plus, the large marble tile mirroring on the floor up the wall achieves a seamless and spacious feel.

Honestly, you can’t go wrong with a black and white colour scheme in a small bathroom renovation! The darker hues of matte black create details throughout the bathroom installation, which gives the eyes interesting focal points to look at, so the space does not seem dull. The black offers attention-grabbing details and helps to expand the space.

Make a Statement with the Floor or Wall

One of the best ways to make any narrow or small bathroom renovation feel larger is by highlighting the room’s length rather than its width by using a stand-out tile on the largest empty area of the space. As a result, when individuals walk into the bathroom, all their attention focuses on the large tile area and tricks their brain into thinking that the surface area is more expansive.

Thus, creating a focal point with a bright, exciting, or patterned tile makes the space look larger and feel more spacious.

The key to making a bespoke tile or feature wall really work in a small bathroom renovation is to ensure the tiles don’t overwhelm the rest of the room. A good tip is to balance out the striking pattern with plain colours throughout other elements in the space, ensuring both aspects complement each other seamlessly.

Two of the bathroom installations in our Marrickville small bathroom renovation case study have a feature tile.

In our first bathroom installation, all attention is captured by the gorgeous geometrical black and white floor tiles. This small bathroom renovation creates the perfect monochrome bathroom with subtle white elements thought the rest of the space.

Following the same methodology, another bathroom installation from this Marrickville case study makes a statement with the colourful feature wallpaper.

No Small Bathroom Renovation is Complete without Innovative Storage Solutions!

One of the most challenging aspects of small bathroom renovations is incorporating lots of storage, in addition to making the storage appear elegant and integrated into the overall design. Remember to utilise your walls for smart storage that doesn’t take up too much space, such as installing wall cabinets, built-in nooks, or even basic shelves!

Open-plan bathroom storage solutions are here to stay since they’re attractive and great for displaying all of your favourite lotions and potions, as well as colourful plants! The only stipulation is that things must remain nice and tidy because they are on display.

Pretty much each small bathroom renovation in our Marrickville case study utilises hidden storage behind the mirrors. It’s just a no-brainer – for small bathroom renovations, as the mirror provides a wealth of deep storage, all whilst not intruding into the room. These minor yet compelling elements are what elevate a concept to the level of a designer.

Always Opt for Wall-Hung Sink Cabinets

Wall-hung units – or units on slender legs – are the finest option for faking square footage in any small bathroom renovation. Simply because they allow people to see the room’s borders, tricking the eye into thinking the space is more expansive. Again, pretty much each small bathroom renovation in our Marrickville case study utilises floating vanities.

For a cohesive effect in your small bathroom renovation, make sure you choose a floating vanity style that matches the colour of your walls and think about wall-mounted taps, which allow for slimmer basins and more space on top for bathroom accoutrements.

Save Thousands on Your Bathroom Labour Costs With Chloe Watton.

>

I think it’s safe to say when it comes to saving money, we’re all eager to know more. So, if you’re currently renovating or even just thinking about updating your bathroom, we have some wise words from interior influencer, Chloe.

Earlier this year we worked with Chloe to help her produce her dream bathroom. She came to us with a strong vision of what she wanted from her bathroom, and she hasn’t disappointed. Better yet, she has created the most beautiful space, whilst saving incredible amounts of money, with the help of her finance Aaron.

Chloe is 24 and recently bought a miners cottage built in 1880 with her partner Aaron. She has a full time job and does interior influencing on the side. Even though she hates the word influencer, Chloe does a beautiful job at sharing her life and home online to her 31.6k followers.

Find out how Chloe did it below :

‘The cottage caught my eye just before it went to auction and I was IN LOVE. There is something so warming about the large open hallway and it truly was a gem waiting to be polished up.

I knew this house was gasping for an extension and even though we weren’t sure if it was possible, we went for it and Aaron DIY built our two storey extension by hand during furlough!‘

‘DIY. It’s the only way you can save a reasonable amount of money really as labour costs are incredibly high and sometimes tradesmen are unreliable because they’re so busy right now, catching up with work after the pandemic.‘

How Much Did You Save On Labour Costs By Doing It By Yourselves

‘We never got a quote however, after adding up the average costs of labour we believe it is around the £10,000 mark. Our bathroom was quite an intricate design which included knocking walls down, re positioning a window, building an additional shower nook, bespoke carpentry work and lots of electrical work. It was a back to brick renovation so, very expensive in labour costs.‘

Money Saving Do It Yourself Tips

We aren’t all as fortunate to land a partner with insane DIY skills like Aaron, but there are plenty of smaller things that you can try and complete without paying for a tradesman.

Here’s a list of some of the things you can do yourself, that will take a big % of your labour bill.

Rip your existing bathroom out yourself – Yes this will take some elbow grease and might be end up taking more time – but it’s another £100+ off the billTiling/painting – if you’re up for the challenge, done your research and have the time, why not tackle some tiling? This could save you thousands on your bill.Build your own shelves – you can purchase shelving or even go wild and completely create your own floating shelves with rope and a rectangular piece of wood.Install your own taps – I know this might sound scary but there are some good youtube tutorials on how to do this yourself and it doesn’t look too daunting.

Disclaimer – we love a DIY hack but please never tamper with gas – Please call a plumber, avoid any hazardous conditions.

Excellence In Ensuite Bathroom Ideas

Stellar Ensuite Design Options To Upgrade Any Home

Ensuite bathrooms typically represent a much used, private haven within a home. And as such, they should be moulded into an image reflective of the homeowner’s personal taste and requirements.

Typically compact, ensuite bathrooms provide a perfect area in which to express some creative license as it pertains to interior design, and implement whatever sort of aesthetic takes your fancy – no matter how outlandish it might be.

In this blog, we’ll discuss some stellar ensuite bathroom ideas that can help transform your ensuite into one of the most stylish rooms in the entire home, in spite of a likely diminutive size.

From a variety of colour options to storage hacks, fixtures, fittings and layout recommendations, we’re brimming with suggestions to enhance ensuite bathroom suites to the fullest extent…

Ensuite Bathroom Layout Ideas

The very first thing to consider when plotting your ensuite bathroom ideas is the actual layout of the space, accounting for helpful storage hacks and basic thoughts on the way the room will be styled.

You’ll need to think about which fixtures and bathroom furniture you deem as essential inclusions. For instance, it is highly unlikely that a typical ensuite bathroom size will be able to accommodate a freestanding bathtub. So you might instead have your heart set on a corner shower cubicle.

Door projections inwards and outwards, and how they will impact on essential surrounding fittings such as the toilet or sink are also key elements to keep in mind. Perhaps wall hung toilets or short projection models should be sourced in especially compact ensuite areas.

And see if there’s any way to maximize space by capitalising on unique storage solutions – negating the presence of a bathroom cabinet to fit shelving in a small alcove could be one such stylish, easily implementable means for doing so. Or seek out further inspiration in our blog, 12 Bathroom Storage Ideas For Small Spaces.

Ensuite Bathroom Colour Ideas

Again, the colour scheme of an ensuite bathroom should ultimately line up in accordance with personal preferences. But it would be remiss of us not to mention the general uplift the presence of bright, light tones can bring to the space in general.

Darker or harsher, bolder shades and striking patterns don’t tend to work so well in small ensuite bathrooms especially. So unless you’re decorating a particularly large ensuite room, it is recommended that these types of hues are restricted to the flooring only, if used at all.

Pastel tones and creamy colours are superb interior colour options to really open up the space, especially for an ensuite bathroom in which the infiltration of natural light is at a premium. These sort of shades will reflect any incoming light extremely well.

Whatever colour décor you do opt for, it is imperative to team similar tones together in most ensuite bathroom interiors. Sharp colour contrasts can draw the walls in and make the room appear cluttered, as opposed to the light and airy feel provided by bright, consistent colour combinations.

Furthermore, calmer hues are more likely to better complement the main features of the ensuite, unless black bathroom accessories and other darker fixtures dominate the space.

Best Bathroom Furniture Picks For Ensuite Bathrooms

Milano Lurus Oak 400mm Compact Wall Hung Cloakroom Vanity Unit w/ Basin

It’s been alluded to earlier in the blog, but the role that wall mounted bathroom furniture can play in maximizing space in a bathroom ensuite cannot be underestimated.

The likes of wall hung bathroom vanities are a particularly excellent ensuite vice, teaming impressive aesthetics with immense functionality – a basin meshes seamlessly with effective bathroom storage in one streamlined component.

What’s more, the finish of so many of these type of units will serve to complement the overall interior scheme of an ensuite bathroom. Light oaks, subtle anthracites and glossy whites all prominently feature within a multitude of cloakroom vanity unit ranges.

Outside of main furniture stylings like vanities, toilets and basins, other less essential elements can prove a crucial factor in implementing stylish ensuite bathroom ideas successfully.

Think items such as bathroom mirrors and even smaller, accentuating bathroom accessories (more later) that can deliver a subtle enhancement to the overall ensuite scheme. Chrome accessories are pretty much a failsafe option, and their reflective finish can combine well with light and airy colour themes in modern and traditional ensuite bathrooms alike.

Whatever you do select, it’s again crucial to keep the harmony in terms of your overall colour scheme and surrounding fixtures and fittings, rather than introducing harsh contrast tones.

Get Wise To Accessorize An Ensuite Bathroom

Milano Bexley Light Oak Modern Wall Hung Mirror 700mm x 500mm

After briefly touching on the importance accessories can play in an ensuite bathroom, we can explain in a little more detail why they can represent such a vital element, even in comparison with dominant and more sizeable fittings.

For such a typically restricted space especially, less can indeed be more, and the minute details can actually catch the eye more than larger components.

Plus, that creative license we initially harped on about can perhaps be exercised to a greater extent with accentuating items, rather than with bigger, more obvious defining fixtures. Even the likes of toilet roll holders can make a huge difference, as explained in greater detail in our blog, How To Choose The Right Toilet Roll Holder.

As well as items such as these and accompanying bathroom essentials like toothbrush holders and soap dishes meanwhile, other items can add subtle style to the space, even if they aren’t necessarily ‘household’ bathroom additions.

Bathroom plants housed in snazzy vases, flower arrangements and candles all offer an excellent means to make an ensuite bathroom feel a lot more homely, for instance. They’ll especially serve to upgrade ensuites with a classic, rustic vibe, and those that lean into cottagecore design elements.

And the complementary features of key fittings cannot be dismissed either. Think taps and toilet seats as they pertain to the basin or toilet you have installed, or are planning to fit within an ensuite bathroom.

Crucially, as aforementioned, less is more, so be sure not to overdo it in terms of introducing accessories. You want to retain a spacious, airy feel to the room (even if space is at a premium) as opposed to making the area appear cluttered or too busy.

Project Profile: The JW Marriott Charlotte

Nestled in the dynamic uptown neighborhood of Charlotte, North Carolina, the new luxurious JW Marriott hotel designed by HKS Architects is a retreat for guests who want to enjoy the southern city’s urban surroundings. Grounded in regal craftsmanship inspired by Queen Charlotte, the city’s namesake, each guest room features upscale amenities and a luxurious bathroom.

To successfully bring the hotel in Charlotte’s booming corridor to life, one challenge the building team faced was reducing laydown on the tight urban site. Recognizing the repetitive nature of all 335 bathrooms in the hotel made them a candidate for off-site prefabrication, DPR Construction proposed utilizing SurePods bathroom pods.

In hospitality construction, bathrooms generate the majority of punch list issues and require complex coordination. General contractors have to sequence 10 construction trades – including electrical, plumbing and finishing work ranging from painting to mirror hanging – all working in an area of about 50 to 100 square feet. With many trades coming and going in a confined area, there’s substantial risk of damage to previously completed work. DPR was able to sideline these issues by working with SurePods. Concurrent construction enabled the team to build in a controlled warehouse environment and reduced the need for onsite skilled labor, designed laydown and staging areas.

Given that the hotel is situated on a crowded busy inner-city street and bordered on two sides by other active construction sites, the prefab approach also helped reduce coordination issues and site challenges. With just-in-time deliveries, SurePods was able to quickly supply bathroom pods and minimize traffic disruptions, in addition to maintaining a safe environment in the largely pedestrian-friendly community.

According to hospitality industry magazine, Hotel Management, the project team was able to prefabricate all customized bathroom pods complete with finishes in accordance with hotel design features and then load them level by level into the 23-story building— all over a period of just 13 weeks. The pod deliveries occurred at night. In a project overview, DPR explained their “team self-performed the loading of the pods into the building and often exceeded production targets.”

As the North American leader of factory-built bathroom pods, SurePods loves to support commercial projects in the hospitality market. Since 2005, we’ve been crafting modular bathroom units and supplying them across the country. If you’re interested in partnering with us, the longest producing pod company in the nation, reach out. We would love to support your upcoming project. Connect with us at [email protected]
